Grown from the island,
made by hand

Canaipa Island is a place where land, sea, river and sky meet — a quiet corner of subtropical Australia where a particular kind of stillness shapes everything made here. Each flute begins not with a design, but with a conversation with the timber.

The timbers are rare, carefully sourced, and often carry their own history: Ancient New Zealand Kauri pulled from peat bogs after thousands of years underground; Tasmanian Blackwood with the resonance of old-growth forest; Queensland species rarely found in instrument-making.

Every flute is bored, shaped, tuned, and finished by hand. No two are the same. Each one is an instrument first — built to be played — but made with the same attention a craftsman brings to furniture that will outlast its maker.

Ancient Kauri

Subfossil timber recovered from New Zealand peat bogs. Thousands of years old. Warm, complex resonance — unlike any living timber.

Tasmanian Blackwood

Dense, beautifully figured old-growth acacia. Produces a rich, full tone with a singing upper register.

Spotted Gum & Swamp Mahogany

Local Queensland hardwoods with extraordinary grain movement. Responsive, articulate — flutes with a voice shaped by this landscape.

PNG Rosewood

Dense tropical hardwood with a warm, focused tone. Favoured for higher-register flutes — clear, carrying, and beautifully tactile.

David

After 21 years in frontline emergency services, I came to Canaipa Island and came back to the thing that had helped me survive it: making and playing flutes.

There is something in the work — the slow shaping of rare timber, the tuning by ear, the moment a new instrument finds its voice — that quiets the noise that years of that kind of service leaves behind. I make and play flutes because it is my passion. But I also make them because these musical instruments can create a peaceful place in which to heal, and I wish to carry that intention forward.

Every Canaipa flute is made in the hope that it brings peace to whoever holds it.

The timber already knows what it wants to become. The maker's job is mostly to listen, and to get out of the way.
